Noren

Noren are a type of Japanese curtain which hang in shop and restaurant entrances. In Japan, they are used to signify that an establishment is open for business and are taken down at closing time.

In autumn 2021, I was commissioned by Harajuku Kitchen to design and make a noren for their new container kitchen at St. James Quarter in Edinburgh.
I was asked to design a version of seigaiha, the iconic Japanese wave pattern, using Harajuku Kitchen's signature pink & grey colour scheme.

The noren provides the kitchen area with protection from the elements and acts as a decorative screen between the staff and customers.
